TASTE OF BENGAL (Take-Away only), 96 SEA STREET, HERNE BAY This take-away on the outskirts of Herne Bay opened at the beginning of 1998. It has a pleasant clean appearance which is enhanced by a small, smart sparkling van for home deliveries parked outside with the name of the restaurant emblazoned on it. Something not many take-aways have. One large window looks into the waiting area, while the other allows the onlooker to see into the kitchen where, once again, everything looked clean and tidy. The better than average quality menus contain all the usual dishes plus some less common specials. Initial impressions, therefore, are very favourable and in 2005 encouraged me in for a take-away rather than return home to my usual restaurant. I found that all dishes were a very good standard, so on the rare occasions I am in the area I now make a point of going there rather than wait until I get home. I've always found it to be excellent. The Pathia's always hot and spicy with a nice lentilly sauce, Mixed Vegetable Bhaji has a good selection of vegetables, well cooked and tastily spiced, Tarka Dall has a good with a garlic under-flavour, and the Tandoori Chicken is well marinated and full of flavour. Even the rice tastes fresh and fragrant. Good sized portions and prices about average. Service at the reception counter is friendly, it is always clean and tidy and the chef's in the kitchen are always visible (and busy) from street and waiting area. All in all I have to say that it is one of the best take-aways I can recall, and well worth carrying my take away-some 35 miles home! It proved a good decision to try it out five years ago.
