TAJ MAHAL, 51 THE CAUSEWAY

A cosy little restaurant seating 40. Decor pleasant, still retaining the old style red flock wallpaper, the hallmark of Indian restaurant decor. Comprehensive menu of all the standard dishes, plus a few interesting looking lobster and duck variations.

The food was much better than the majority of high street curry houses I have visited recently. Onion Bhajee (4 good sized bahjias) starter excellent having plenty of onion without too much gram flour, spicy, well cooked and crisp all the way through. The only minor criticism is that they came without any garnish of any sort and looked very bare and plain on the plate. The Prawn Pathia starter was also very tasty but filling as the prawn pathia was in a sandwich of 2 puris. One would have been quite sufficient.

Sheek Kebab starter also well spiced and tasty. Interestingly, this did come with a small salad garnish, so perhaps they just forgot it with the bhajias.

Two main dishes - Chicken Jalfrezi and Chicken Dansak were both first class. Both well cooked in a wonderfully spicy sauce, each with its own distinct flavour but both nice and hot. The Jalfrezi was particularly tongue tingling as it had a good amount of chillies cooked in it (as distinct from the practice of throwing them in after cooking). Having had a large pre Christmas lunch my wife decided to forgo a main dish and sustain herself with just a taste of ours plus a vegetable dish. She chose Sag and Cauliflower and it was absolutely delicious - the best vegetarian dish I’ve had for a long while. Much to her irritation I couldn’t resist it and ate most of it! Fortunately she must have had a good Christmas lunch as she refused the offer of a second helping and made do with bits and pieces from the other dishes. The other vegetable dish - a Vegetable Bhajee - was also extremely tasty and well cooked. Rice well up to standard and the Peshwari Nan also good.

Portions were plentiful, especially the starters, service was efficient and friendly and prices about standard for the area.

All in all an excellent meal and even though it is a fair standard high street curry house by appearance I would rate this one above the average high street curry house for quality and taste of food.
