HOO SPICE (Take Away only), 10 MAIN ROAD

(This used to be called Surma. I don't know when the name changed or whether there is a change of ownership/chef. Until I re-visit or find out I retain the report I wrote when it was Surma).

This take away is quite unprepossessing at first sight having a plain, almost shabby exterior appearance. However, the inside, which is surprisingly spacious for just a take-away, is clean enough if rather plain. Indeed, appearances can be misleading as I noted they display a local council ‘Clean Food Premises 1997/98’ certificate on the wall. The owner, Mr Islam, is extremely friendly and tells me they have been there for 10 years, so it must be OK (although there is no other competition, either take-away or restaurant, in the area).

The menu is a comprehensive list of all the usuals at reasonable prices. The food was OK if nothing special. The Chicken Tikka Dhansak was not particularly hot (spice hot) and had an unusual underlying flavour - a bit like slightly burnt brown sugar - but was pleasant enough. Mixed Dry Vegetable Bhaji was nicely cooked (not overdone) although only lightly spiced. Vegetable Pulao very nice. Good sized portions and although nothing special it was a competent formula curry and the place is a little haven in an otherwise curryless little town.
