SPICES OF BENGAL, CHARING HILL, CHARING This 60-seater is comfortably furnished with a pleasant decor and, situated as it is on the top of a hill about a mile from the village of Charing, those sitting by the window have an excellent view over the North Downs during daylight hours. A large car park outside caters for its out-of-town location. Unusually the restaurant doesn’t display a menu outside, so first time diners enter without knowing whether the menu is standard high street or wildly innovative, nor what the prices are like. In the event it is a standard high street curry house menu with all the usuals at fairly standard high street prices. However, the food is slightly better than the standard high street fare. I have been four or five times in recent years and each time the food has been enjoyable. Chicken Tikka Dansak was above average in a thick, dark tasty sauce, Tarka Dall very tasty and again better than average high street offerings, Tandoori Chicken a good standard, and vegetable dishes such as Mixed Vegetable Bhaji and Aloo Gobi all nicely spiced - almost a peppery taste. A good standard formula curry. Service good, and despite not being in a town or village centre it has been going for a number of years (since about the mid nineties I believe) so it must be satisfying its customers. What's more, it's always crowded on a Saturday night, which many are not so that must be a good sign.. All in all a pleasant meal in a pleasant restaurant and I have no hesitation in returning when I'm in the area. Malcolm Wilkins - July 2010 |
