SHAHJAN, 9 BADDOW ROAD

Fairly standard Indian restaurant seating about 50 in comfortable if fairly average surroundings. Menu similarly standard listing all the favourites but nothing out of the ordinary (and interestingly it has not yet jumped on the Balti bandwagon!).

Popadoms light and crisp with a good pickle/chutney selection. Lamb Tikka starter well flavoured although I have had more tender pieces of lamb!! Murg (sic) Chat disappointing - largish lumps of chicken rather than the small pieces usual in such a dish (and as described on the menu), lacking the usual sharpish tang, in a thin watery sauce and far too salty. Accompanying garnish very basic - only a few bits of shredded lettuce. Therefore very unimpressive!

Main dishes generally satisfactory but nothing special. Chicken Pathia had a nice, underlying hotness although the sauce (which was rather too thick, being more like a thick paste) unusually had a strong coconut flavour more reminiscent of Malaysian curries. Chicken Pasanda sauce very thick, sweet and creamy and once again a bit heavy on the creamed coconut. Mixed Vegetable Curry fairly bland and apart from the unusual, if not exotic, broad beans the vegetable selection was limited and unimaginative.

Portions sufficient and service was good and friendly, and we were given a complimentary liqueur after the meal. However, all in all a standard high street curry house meal.
