MEOPHAM TANDOORI, 2 THE PARADE, WROTHAM ROAD A comfortable restaurant seating about 60 with glass partitions every couple of tables and a small fountain giving a pleasant atmosphere. A comprehensive menu covering all the usuals. I visit periodically and have never been disappointed. Starters usually good. Onion Bhajis (four round bhajias) were a bit solid but surprisingly tasty and served with a good accompanying salad and mint raita, while the Aloo Chat Massala had an excellent tangy spicy flavour. Prawn Puri also a good average for this dish and only the Chicken Chat Massala could possibly be faulted as the pieces of chicken were much to large and chunky for a Chat (despite the menu description of being "small pieces of chicken"), and a bit oily. The main dishes I have eaten over a number of visits have all been good. Chicken Dhansak in a thick, spicy, lentil based sauce and was first class. Meat Vindaloo in a good, dark sharp flavoured sauce and very hot - just as it should be. Chicken Tikka Korai in a thick sauce with plenty of onion and sliced peppers and tastily spiced, with the chicken pieces retaining a delicious tandoori flavour. The Shahi Lamb was a little mild for my tastes but delicately flavoured and well received by the recipient. (Only one small criticism on one occasion was that the Tandoori Chicken, while delicious, was two pieces of which one was virtually devoid of meat. Perhaps we were just unlucky with that piece as the portions of all the rest were perfectly adequate). Vegetable dishes again generally good. Aloo Gobi fairly dry having been fried with spices which gave a nice, almost crisp coating and peppery flavour to the pieces. Tarka Dal well spiced, and on the last occasion the Mixed Vegetable Bhaji contained a good selection of vegetables, lightly cooked and spiced and fresh tasting with fresh coriander sprinkled over it. (This was much better than one previous visit when the vegetables of this dish had been very thinly sliced - almost julienne - which made it quite greasy. Fortunately the most recent visit seems to be the norm). Service has been generally good, although on one occasion (mid week) there were a couple of young lads serving who looked like students and spent more time chatting amongst themselves than keeping an eye on the needs of customers. However, these seem to have long gone and recent service has been good. Portions adequate, prices about average and all in all a very good restaurant serving above average formula curries.
