MEHIRAAJ,32 Windmill Street, Gravesend

An Indian restaurant has been fairly long established on this site, the original being the Akash and remained as such for many years doing a steady if fairly modest trade before it closed early in 1999. It re-opened shortly after under the name of Light of Bengal, when again it appeared to do a steady but unspectacular trade. In the summer of 2005 it changed to the Kingfisher. I was told that the management and chef remained the same, although I felt the food had improved. Again it did a steady if unspectacular trade, but obviously not steady enough as towards the end of 2009 it closed again to re-open and smartened up as Indian Villa under (so I was told) different ownership. However, I did not get round to sampling the food as it only lasted a few months and, after some more refurbishments, it opened under its present name on 1st July 2010.. I was told that it is under new ownership and unconnected with any other Indian restaurants in the town, although the wording (i.e. descriptions of dishes) bear a remarkable resemblance to the descriptions used in the menus of the main chain of restaurants in town (all those connected with the Gandhi).

Further report once I've sampled the food
