LITTLE RAJ TANDOORI, 20 NORTH STREET. I first visited this restaurant in 1997 when it was called Nawab. It changed sometime later to the Curry Cottage and changed once more at approximately late 1999 to it’s current name although retains the same ownership as when it was the Curry Cottage. Situated in an oak beamed Tudor building, the restaurant has separate smoking and no smoking dining rooms (although the non smoking room at the front only seats 18 and is popular, leaving most table space in the smoking area at the back which seats over twice as many. Perhaps they have changed it since our visit). It looks slightly scruffier (or perhaps well used is a better phrase) than when it was Nawab. Fairly standard menu and less comprehensive than when it was Nawab, but some interesting variations amongst the many house specialities. Starters all good without being outstanding. Crisp Onion Bhajias, tasty Sheek Kebab and tangy Chicken Chat, although the letter a little oily. Tandoori Chicken nicely flavoured as was the Chicken Dhansak in a thick sauce although not as hot as served in many restaurants. The Madras was also not as hot as expected for this dish, and the sauce a bit on the thin side. Vegetable curries fairly standard, although there was little difference between the Mixed Vegetable Bhaji and the Mixed Vegetable Curry (in a moment of financial rashness we ordered one of each to compare them!). The vegetable dishes were slightly oily. The quantities of all dishes were quite sufficient and the prices fairly average. Service friendly and efficient and little extras like sliced oranges accompanying the hot towels is always a good touch. Overall an enjoyable meal although, like most Indian restaurants, nothing particularly outstanding. Malcolm Wilkins - May 2001
