LITHUANIA

As with Latvia, the only Indian restaurant is in the capital, Vilnius, where they tell me it is the only one in the country (although in common with Riga, I was told that there was another in Vilnius which didn’t last long). Once again it is in the ‘Sue’ chain, this one being the original which opened in April 1998. Like it’s sister restaurant in Riga it is called Sue’s Indian Raja and is situated in Jogailos. Incidentally, don’t be confused by a sign saying Sue’s Ka Thai as it is the same place. There are two restaurant - one Indian and one Thai - at the same address. Down a few stairs (stairs seem the norm for Indian restaurants) and the Indian restaurant is to the left, while the Thai is to the right. Similar size dining areas and quite separate menus, but no doubt you can mix and match.

The Indian restaurant seats about 40 in high backed chairs. Menu is fairly standard with dishes like Bhuna, Madras etc. featuring. The most interesting dish offered is called ‘Birmingham Balti’ which the menu describes as "being cooked in the Balti style of that well known UK city" There’s fame for the Midlands for you! Once again prices are about the same as in UK, which again is not cheap by local standards. For example Onion Bhaji is 10 lita (£1.75) while most main dishes are 28 lita (just under a fiver). However, reading from a newsletter produced for customers is it clear that this restaurant (and no doubt others in the chain) get a lot of their regular customers from ex pats and diplomatic staff who can afford it rather than locals who may not be able to.
