GREEN CHILLI, 8 CLIFF ROAD

Opened in July 2001 this take-away is under same chain as Baba and Ganges restaurants in Truro, both of which are good so it has a promising introduction.

A pleasant and roomy reception area beyond which one can observe the cooking area.

My main dish of Chicken Tikka Pathia was fairly standard formula curry, although the chicken showed little sign of being in a tandoori oven (no tell tale skewer marks and no discernible tandoori flavour). The dish was fairly hot but the sweet /sour balance was not particularly noticeable. Nevertheless it was OK. Another main dish was Vegetable Balti which was good. It contained a reasonable selection of vegetables, plenty of onions and was pleasantly spiced. Although the vegetables were cooked beyond the al dente stage they were not overcooked to be mushy. This dish should come with a Nan.

Another vegetable dish as a side dish - Dal Shambar was again OK, but it was mainly vegetables, being distinctly light on the lentils. Again pleasantly spiced although I would not rate it as ‘hot’ as described by the menu (and as Sambars usually are) Indeed, it wasn’t too far removed from the Vegetable Balti and if they were in the same sized dishes it might have been hard to distinguish which was which. However, it was perfectly acceptable. Rice as standard, and good portions, although prices above average for take-away.

All in all a competent, if unremarkable, formula curry.
