CURRY SCENE

The first Indian restaurant - The Golden Temple - was established in Bodmin in 1985 by a husband and wife team - he doing the cooking while she oversees the dining area. I visited in about 1992/3 and again 1997. On neither occasion was I impressed (see report). When I last visited the lady told me that they were struggling to keep it going, but I noted it was still there in 2004, with the same sari-clad lady (and still empty!) I reported at the time that 'each time I visit Bodmin I expect to see demise of the The Golden Temple, particularly after the opening of a second Indian restaurant'  Well, it has 'demised' as it was closed by the Environmental Health authorities in 2005. But as  phoenix rises from the ashes, a new Indian (or rather Nepalese) restaurant - Gurkha - opened on the site in the spring of 2007. This is owned by the same people that run the identically named restaurant in Camelford.

A take-away (Viraj) opened in about 1996 and this changed to new owners in 2000 who extended it to full restaurant status. The food is much better then The Golden Temple ever was, and better than the Gurkha  from my recent experience.

A take-away (Garam Massala) opened at 60 Fore Street in the summer of 2006
