ROCHESTER CURRY SCENE The Medway conurbation starts at Strood and over the Medway to Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham and Rainham without any apparent break in the urban sprawl apart from the river. For the purposes of this guide I deal with them under their separate town headings. Rochester has six Indian restaurants, five in the High Street, plus a new branch of Shozna ( a restaurant in Strood) in Maidstone Road. Starting at the Medway bridge (Strood) end of the High Street is Star of India at number 8, (until February 2002 this used to be called Mak's Curry Nest and owned by Mak Khan who runs the original Mak’s Curry Nest at the other end at number 364 where the Rochester/Chatham border is situated). Moving along is the Taste of Two Cities at number 106 (Rochester's first, opening in about 1990) and further along at 188 is The Cumin Club (opening in December 2001). The other part of the high street - past the Star Hill roundabout - is the Bengal Brasserie at number 356 while a few doors along is ‘Mak's Curry Nest’. The Shozna - the newest addition opening in the summer of 2005) is at 153 Maidstone Road. All except the Cumin Club and Shozna are fairly standard High Street Indian restaurants with standard menus and serving formula curries. The Cumin Club is a modern, contemporary restaurant with a menu to match, although it still covers the usuals. The Shozna is also a modern restaurant with the same menu as the original in Strood, which includes a number of less common dishes in addition to all the usuals.. Although I don't usually include restaurants other than those from the Indian sub-continent, I have included a report on the Singapora, as it does offer a range of other East Asian dishes and curries (and I go there quite frequently) Malcolm Wilkins - October 2006 |
