CURRY SCENE As far as I can see there are four Indian restaurants in Ilfracome - two purely Indian restaurants and two that offer a wider selection of curries. The two Indian restaurants are the Bombay Palace at 36 Greenclose Road (off Wilder Road), and the Ilfracombe Tandoori in the High Street. Further along Wilder Road is the Gurkha Bar and Oriental Restaurant at 12 Belgrave Promenade. The name suggests it is Nepalese run (although I don't know) but in addition to Nepalese and Indian dishes, it also offers Chinese, Malay and Singaporean food. It is a buffet-style restaurant run on a 'eat as much as you like at a fixed price' basis. It sounds very much like the Gurkha restaurant in Wareham, Dorset, on which I have reported and I believe it is run by the same family. If the menu and quality of food are the same as the one in Wareham, then it should be very good. The fourth is the Rajah in Portland Street, which despite the name, is run by an English family. In addition to Indian curries it offers Far Eastern and Kenyan dishes (the English chef spent some time in Kenya, which explains the rather unusual Kenyan slant). Malcolm Wilkins |
