CURRY SCENE I was told that there were numerous Indian restaurants in Lincoln, but I was hard pressed to find any in the city centre. There is a big, modern place called Planet Masala as part of the Odeon Complex overlooking Brayford Wharf. This has been open about a year, and is a large, modern airy eatery looking somewhere between a Beefeater and a Burger King. An interesting, modern menu (complete with cartoons and pictures for the kids), and looks as though it would appeal to the students from the nearby university and younger age group.Onwards through town an up towards the older part near the castle and cathedral is The Bombay (see report), while near the castle in Eastgate there used to be one called Raj Douth, which was closed when I was there, but I was told that it was now owned by the same family as run The Bombay and was likely to open in the autumn of 2005. I have since been informed by a local contact that it has now opened under the name of Saffron. The others seem to be mainly in the high street, but the high street is very long and the restaurants are in the part away from the centre. Not far from the railway crossing, at no 364 going down high street away from the city is the Taste if India, and as you go further away from the centre you come across the Passage to India, Royal Tandoori, (cheap and cheerful according to my informant), Mowgli, and Moe (this latter one looking the largest and most modern). My local contact tells me that everyone goes to the high street curryhouses ('nobody goes uphill for an Indian' he says) Finally, at the back of the castle in Burton Road is the Sarga, although this is only a take-away. I am sure there must be others, as Lincoln is a sizeable city, but apart from those outside the city centre (including a large restaurant called Maharajah out on the A6 Newark Road), I only found those above within easy walking distance of the centre.
