CURRY SCENE

Surprisingly there are only two Indian restaurants in Newark plus one take-away (with another take-away on the outskirts I was told).

The longest established restaurant is the Asha which has been there for "16 or 17 years" according to the owner. It is a pleasant looking restaurant seating 48 in comfortable surroundings. (It looks much bigger when looking through the window but don’t be fooled - there is a mirrored wall opposite the window!). Inside it appears comfortable but standard restaurant layout. The menu is extensive including all the usuals plus some interesting additions, such as Quail and Venison dishes (but note that one dish called ‘Heron Tikka’ is not heron, the bird, but a venison dish!).

The other restaurant - Shaan - opened about a year ago and is very wine bar in decor. Full details of this one are in the individual restaurant report.

The take-away is the Newark Tandoori which has been there for "about 7˝" years according to the proprietor, who was very friendly and helpful, giving me details of the local curry scene. It offers the standard menu and had appetizing smells coming from the back even though it was lunchtime and closed for business.

Surprising that a town the size of Newark only boasts two Indian restaurants - and only one until recently - but both seem nice attractive places in which to eat.
