GRAVESEND CURRY SCENE Gravesend is well endowed with Indian restaurants, at the last count having twelve in the town. In addition there are numerous others (mainly take-aways) in the suburbs and neighbouring Northfleet. There are also restaurants in nearby villages, which are covered separately. The longest established is the Curry Mecca in Parrock Street, opening in 1972 (although there was one before this in Harmer Street which is now long gone). Until recently all were traditional high street restaurants serving formula curries, the best of which is probably the Gandhi by the riverside in West Street, the Cafe Taj and Tufail in Parrock Street (all three having ownership links). However, in about April 2010 the Rasoi-Ghar opened with Indian ownership and Indian chef, and the difference between the authenticity of the food (Indian) again the more traditional high street curries (mainly Bangladeshi) is marked and I would say that this offers the best authentic Indian food in town. As for take-aways, the Nazif is the newest addition to the town center (opened summer 2007), Blue Ginger the most recent in the suburbs (opening in May 2009 in Valley Drive), while the Milaad in the town centre is probably the longest established. Full details of all are contained in the individual reports. Malcolm Wilkins - September 2010 |
