GRAVESEND CURRY SCENE Gravesend is well endowed with Indian restaurants, at the last count having eleven in the town and others (mainly take-aways) in the suburbs and neighbouring Northfleet. There are also restaurants in nearby villages, which are covered separately. The longest established is the Curry Mecca in Parrock Street, opening in 1972 (although there was one before this in Harmer Street which is now long gone), while the newest is now Dil Raj which opened in March 2007 (the Bombay Masala, opened in late 2006, so did not hold the accolade of newest for long!). All are traditional high street restaurants serving formula curries but probably the best is the Gandhi by the riverside in West Street, the Cafe Taj and Tufail in Parrock Street (all three having ownership links). As for take-aways, the Nazif is the newest addition (opened summer 2007), while the Milaad in the town centre is probably the longest established. Full details of all are contained in the individual reports. Malcolm Wilkins - August 2007 |
