CURRY SCENE

St. Ives boasts two Indian restaurants plus a take-away. The two restaurants are the  Rajpoot in Gabriel Street and the Curry Garden in St. Andrews Street. The latter does not take credit cards and is unlicensed although it advertises BYO in the window. The take-away goes by the name of  Ruby Murries and is in Chapel Street.

Both restaurants look fairly standard (the Rajpoot boasts it's Curry Club sticker prominently in the window) but the take away looked most interesting - not only for it's name but as it is Punjabi run as against the usual Bangladeshi, and offers Punjabi cuisine. It has been open since the summer of 2001 and is run by a family who moved down from Leicester. Although virtually impossible to park outside to pick up a take-away, they have an arrangement with a pub up the road where you can take your curry in and eat it with a pint. An admirable arrangement. Otherwise there's a £1.50 delivery charge. Another admirable thing about this restaurant is that they obtain their meat from two reputable local butchers, and name the suppliers on the menu. Again, a very good touch. I haven't eaten in any of them, but my inclination would be for a Punjabi meal and a pint if I did.
