DARTFORD CURRY SCENE As far as I am aware the first Indian restaurant to open in Dartford was the Kent Curry House, opening nearly 30 years ago. In the early days I used it fairly frequently as there were few curry houses around. It was always good, and still has a good reputation. The second to open (also many years ago) was one in Lowfield Street, which is now called Radhuny (I believe it used to be called The Nawab, and something else before that) This has recently been refurbished in the modern contemporary style (and with a more interesting menu) but I don't know whether the management remain the same. There are three other Indian restaurants in the town centre. One is Jafflong (58 Spittal Street) which was empty at 8pm on the Saturday night I visited, and a smell of burnt oil pervaded the restaurant which was enough to put me off. The second is Eden Palace (41 Hythe Street) which has a long passageway to the reception and dining area. It had a few in it but the empty entrance passage (although having some chairs immediately inside the door) and relative remoteness from the un-visible dining area doesn’t give it a particularly welcoming air. A report is provided. The other, and most recent I believe, is the Mela (at 8 Market Street) There are one or two other Indian restaurants, including take-aways, on the fringes of town and another clutch in the neighbouring town of Crayford. There is also two in the suburb of Stone, and one in the country suburb of Darenth. Reports of these are included under Dartford. Malcolm Wilkins - October 2005
