ARJEE BHAJI (Take-Away), 50 PERRY STREET, NORTHFLEET

Despite the amusing name, the food is less than amusing. I first reported on this take-away in April 1998 when I felt it was poor. At the time I reported "I am unlikely to go back", although I did return a couple of years later, but nothing had changed.

Another three years has gone by so I thought I'd make an effort to be fair and give it another go in case things had changed. They haven't! The Chicken Tikka was poorly flavoured, light coloured and very damp with a lot of 'juice' (water I think) in the bottom of the container. Chicken Dhansak was reasonably hot but lacked the subtleness of spice, while the Mixed Vegetable Curry was again very bland and lifeless. I didn't chance the Dall after my previous poor experiences, but my main complaint was the chicken in both the Tikka and Dhansak. If that was proper chicken I'll eat my hat (which would probably be more tasty)! It had the slightly stringy texture of crab sticks and was so damp that it must have been full of water. It had all the appearance and texture of artificial or reformed meat and as I write I am seriously considering having it analysed, as it was so oddly unlike what one normally gets.

Portions less than generous, but competitively priced. Delivery also unreliable as it took an hour and a quarter after we were assured that it would be 50 to 55 minutes at the latest. As you may have guessed I was singularly unimpressed and its unlikely I will ever, ever order again from this one unless I hear it has changed hands and chef.
